SEPTEMBER HEADMASTER'S NOTES

17 September 2007

Dear Parents:

This is an historic letter to you, in that it is the last parent newsletter that you will receive on paper.  Next month’s newsletter will be electronically mailed to your address and simultaneously posted on our school’s website.  By going paperless, we’ll also be helping to keep paper and postage costs down by eliminating eight mailings per year.  Please do check the website for the monthly calendar as well as the announcements that I will make routinely.  If you do not have access to the website, and you would like to receive a paper copy of the newsletter, please call Sharon Geelen at school and let her know.

A big thank you to all of our grandparents for their participation in our Grandparents Day this past Monday!  We were able to welcome almost 200 grandparents for their day, and the students’ excitement and pride at being able to “show off the people and the place” was a great boost for everyone.  Next year we’ll make sure ALL of the coffee pots work.
A huge thank you to the Rigsby family for their donation of our new signage.  This past Monday was our first major event with the new signs and, for the first time in a long time, we had no questions about where buildings are on campus.
Upper School  families will find enclosed the first progress report for their students.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding the report, please contact your student’s advisor.  If you have questions or concerns regarding a particular subject, please contact the teacher directly.  Please know that next month you will be able to schedule conferences with your student’s teachers.  On Thursday, 11th October from 4-7PM and on Friday, 12th October from 8AM until 12.30PM, parents  will have the opportunity to meet a particular teacher (or all teachers) for 15 minutes to discuss their student’s progress.  More information regarding scheduling these appointments will be posted on our website in early October.

In this mailing please also find enclosed the student handbook/family directory.  Please take a few moments and review the rulebook with your student.  Although there is very little new or changed, I appreciate you becoming familiar with the procedures that we observe at school.  Most especially, please do not schedule lessons or appointments during the academic day.  Additionally, please plan family outings and vacations around the school calendar.  Regular attendance at school is imperative for sound academic progress.  While make-up work helps with the missed assignments, the continuity of classwork is interrupted and frequently causes student performance to slip.   We post the ensuing year’s academic calendar on the website by mid-October.

Thank you for your hard work in making both our Charger Card sales and Sally Foster sales a success.  While we all know that it is a contractual obligation to participate fully in these sales, I want you to know how much I appreciate each family and each individual student doing their fair share to help keep our tuition costs the very lowest of the like-kind schools of which we are affiliated.  Please finish up those Sally Foster sales and turn in your orders by this Friday.  Remember that each student is responsible for selling a minimum of $125 of Sally Foster products; or bring in a check for $62.50 made payable to the school if the student prefers not to participate in selling Sally Foster.

It’s hard to believe, but the first quarter of the school year ends in just three weeks!  Frosh, sophomores and juniors are reminded that they will sit for the Preliminary SAT on Wednesday, 17th October.  Each student needs to bring in $20 for the test, and we will observe a special schedule that day.  Seniors will have that morning off, and those seniors who are applying, are reminded that applications for UNC-Chapel Hill, NCSU, and ECU are due in my office that day.
Thank you for your continued support!
