UPPER SCHOOL

WCDS begins Upper School in 7th grade. The primary focus of the Upper School is preparation for college.science class The curriculum and school activities offer learning experiences, which enhance academic and personal growth. The curriculum stresses the fundamental basics for English, math, foreign language, science, and history. Advanced Placement courses in biology, calculus, chemistry, English, French and U.S. and World History, as well as elective courses such as ecology, marine biology, psychology, advanced studio art, Women's Literature, Exploring the 60's and Digital Photography, allow students to put together an impressive transcript for college applications. Additional course requirements of one-half credit of composition each year for grades 9-12 reflect the heavy emphasis placed on the writing process. Wayne Country Day students are required to have six English credits for graduation as opposed to the standard four required in most schools.

Grading Periods
The Upper School calendar is arranged on a semester system with quarter grading periods. Progress reports are presented at the mid-point of each quarter. Students' grade reports are marked with letter grades in an un-weighted ten-point system.

College Counseling
Wayne Country Day graduates achieve 100% college acceptance, and, while its emphasis has always been on helping students select the college that best meets their individual needs, our graduates attend some of the most selective colleges and universities in the region.

Beginning in grade 9, a college counselor works with students individually and in groups to assist them with college selections, the application process, and scholarship applications.

Athletics
Athletics play an important role in the life of the Middle and Upper School student, with over 90 percent of the student body participating in at least one of the following interscholastic sports: tennis, soccer, volleyball (girls), basketball, baseball, golf, cheerleading, and softball (girls)

The Chargers are members of the CPIC League and have a rich history of success in both league and state competition.

Fine Arts
Middle School students take a quarter each of Art and Music Appreciation.  Students in grades 9-12 may elect courses ranging from basic Art Appreciation to Advanced Studio Art  and Digital Photography. Piano and guitar lessons are also available.

The visual arts program offers students in all grades the opportunity to exhibit their work in regional and local art contests. Each year the Best in Show winner of the school's Terry Fordham Juried Art Show is added to WCDS' permanent art collection.

Extra-Curricular Activities
Upper School students have an opportunity to participate in a number of extra curricular activities. The following clubs have a high level of participation: Student Government Association, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Amity,Quiz Bowl, and Brain Game.

Community Service
In an effort to educate the total student, Wayne Country Day students in grades 7-12 are required to perform a minimum of twenty hours of community service each year. Recognition of responsibility and the importance of voluntarism are emphasized.
