Celebrating the Solar Eclipse at WCDS

WCDS celebrated the solar eclipse with GUSTO! Grades 6-12 gathered in the athletic fields to experience this historic event, enjoy lots of delicious snacks, and just have FUN! In the days that preceded the eclipse, many classes engaged in eclipse-related studies and activities. For example, English 10 Composition students studied the parts of Aristotle’s rhetorical appeal (ethos, pathos, and logos). They investigated more than fifteen sources of information about solar eclipses and identified each source for its rhetorical appeal. In addition to scientific and historic information, students investigated myths, superstitions, art, and music related to solar eclipses.

Week of August 28 Athletic News The Volleyball teams will be having their pictures taken at practice on Thursday August 31. The Tennis team will have pictures on Tuesday September 5, Soccer pictures on Wednesday September 6, and Cross Country on Thursday September 7. I have the picture forms in the office and will give them out on Monday August 28. Annotation Seminar Aug. 30 - Sept. 1

The English Department of WCDS will be offering three one-session annotation seminars to assist new and returning students with developing valuable annotation skills. During these seminars, students will be shown several different annotation methods. They will also receive an annotation guide they can take with them. All English classes require students to annotate their Summer Reading novel(s); however, it is essential that students are knowledgeable of the cross-curricular value of close reading strategies which will help them effectively approach the variety of complex texts they will undoubtedly encounter in college.
