Distinguished Speaker Recap

On Wednesday, February 7, WCDS hosted a presentation by and discussion with Dr. Malcolm Beech, the director of the United States Colored Troops Living History Association. As part of the month of Emancipation-themed events at the school organized by Mr. Cook, Dr. Beech gave an overview history of Africans who were forced to America, and then a detailed account of the approximately-200,000 who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. There were many surprises in store for the students in Dr. Beech’s presentation. He gave evidence of the sophistication of Africans who were kidnapped from their homeland into slavery, making it abundantly clear that slaves were not mere savages in the wild

The NCISAA Swimming Championships will be on Monday February 19 in Greensboro. This also marks the first day for spring sports here at WCDS. The practice times for the week are listed below. There will be a parent meeting on Tuesday February 20 at 6pm in the PAC. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!

WCDS Early Years will present their own version of the popular children's book, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, on February 23, 2018 at 11:00 am in the Performing Arts Center. We hope to see you there!

Week of February 12 Athletic News

This marks the beginning of the NCISAA basketball tournament. The girls basketball team received a 5 seed and the boys basketball team received an 8 seed in the playoffs. This marks the second year in a row that both the girls and boys both received top 8 seeds. Both teams will host games on Thursday night, the girls at 5:30 and the boys at 7:00. The semi-finals and finals will be February 24 and 25 in the High Point area. The NCISAA swimming championships will be on Monday February 19 in Greensboro at 11:30AM. Virtual Visit from the Director of the Civil War Institute

On Monday, January 29, WCDS hosted a discussion (via video chat) with Dr. Peter Carmichael, the Director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College. As part of the ongoing month of Emancipation-themed events at the school, Dr. Carmichael answered questions from students and History Teacher Joe Cook (a Gettysburg College alumnus) about American slavery and the Civil War. There was no sugar-coating the hard truths of the past in the discussion (Mr. Cook points out that a common statement by his former professor is that "We need to get past the bedtime stories we tell ourselves about history"). This marks the CPIC basketball tournament week for VB, VG, JVB, JVG, and MSB. The CPIC Swimming Championships will be on Tuesday February 6 in Winterville. I will be updating the web throughout the week. Right now, there are NO games scheduled for Saturday February 10, but this is a makeup date for the CPIC Tournament.
