Headmaster's September Newsletter

September 6, 2017

Dear Parents:

It’s hard to believe that we’re beginning our fifth week of school already!  This year has seemed to fly by thus far; it won’t be long before our Fall Family Weekend (5th-9th October) is here!  With the resumption of classes on Tuesday, 10th October, we bid an official good-bye to summer.

In the Early Years and Lower School we’re looking forward to welcome our grandparents and grand- friends this Monday, 11th September.  Beginning at 7:45 AM, we’ll have refreshments in the hallway and our honored guests will be able to visit the classrooms of their favorite students.  At 8:30 AM we’ll head down to the Performing Arts Classroom for a short musical program.  By 9:00 AM, it’s back to our classrooms to begin the academic day.  Upper School will observe a regular class day.

Also on Monday, 11th September, parents of the Class of 2019 will meet in the Library at 5:45 PM to discuss the important events of the junior year.  And the first big event for the junior year, which also involves the sophomore and the frosh classes is the PSAT which will be administered on Wednesday, 11th October.

And speaking of testing, the Iowa Assessments for grades 1-8 will occur from Monday, 16 October through the following Monday, 23rd October.  Each day the students will sit for different sections of test.  Rather than to exhaust our students and turn the Assessment into a torturous marathon, we choose to break the Assessment into smaller sections, based upon grade level and testing experience.  PLEASE assure your student that in NO WAY is this Assessment a “high stakes” test.  Rather we use the data which we collect to compare each individual student’s progress from the previous academic year.  There is no cause to be anxious or “stressed out.”  Please refrain from making routine appointments or missing school during these dates.  Once we receive the results from the Assessment, the Lower School (grades 1-6) and Intermediate School (grades 7-8) will not have classes on Thursday, 16 November and teachers will use the day to process the data.

Mrs. Smith will begin her Book Fair on Friday, 22nd September, which will last until the following Friday, the last work day for the month of September.

Best,

Todd Anderson
