Headmaster's October Newsletter

September 29, 2017

Dear Parents:

We’ve just completed our eighth week of school and finally autumn is in the air!  This coming Wednesday will be our last day of school before the Fall Family Weekend holiday.  I hope you all have the opportunity to spend time together as a family during this holiday.  Classes resume on Tuesday, 10 October.

  • Friday, 13 October is the end of the First Quarter.  Upper School parents (grades 7-12) please check your student’s PowerSchool™ account for the First Quarter grades on Monday, 16 October.  Lower School Parents will have their student’s report card in Friday Folders on 20 October.

  • As you already know from last month’s newsletter, Iowa Assessments will be given to grades 1-6 during the first two hours of 16-23 October.  Grades 7 and 8 will take their Iowa Assessments on 17-19 October.  We will apprise you of meeting days and times for the results when we receive them in November.  Please remember that Thursday, 16 November will be a Teacher Work Day for our Lower School (grades 1-6) teachers as they analyze the Iowa results.  There will be no school for Lower School on that day.

  • Grade 9, 10 and 11 will sit for the PSAT on Wednesday, 11 October.  Please make sure your student pays the $20 test fee at your convenience.  Results of the PSAT are mailed to us in early December.  Seniors are not required to come to school on PSAT day; they have that day to finish whatever last minute college applications/essays they need to do.  For grades 9-11, after the Iowa Assessments and the PSAT, the Student Government will have an activity day after lunch.

  • If you have not already done so, PLEASE link your VIC card at Harris Teeter to our school.  When you check out, just let the cashier know that you want your VIC card linked to Wayne Country Day School.

  • Our BIG NIGHT is Friday, 27 October.  “Spooky Hukilau” is the Hawaiian-Halloween theme of our Fundraising event this year.  $250 buys a couple or just one person to the dinner dance, featuring “Shine.” Dinner begins at 7.00PM at the Goldsboro Events Center, (formerly the Goldsboro Country Club).  With the purchase of each ticket also comes the opportunity to win one of eight great prizes that include: 30% off tuition for one student next year; 50% off tuition for one student next year; a catered dinner for 10, thanks to Funky Fresh Foods; five wonderful get-away trips to Asheville, Charleston, New York City, Montréal, and the premiere trip: a four- night stay in Honolulu, Hawai’i at the Hilton Hawaiian Village with airfare, and a $250 hotel credit.  Please remember this is our BIG fundraiser for the year and we want to make it both fun and profitable.

  • Autumn Sports Awards will occur on Sunday, 29 October at 5:00 PM in the gymnasium.

  • Winter Sports will begin on Monday, 30 October.  Parents of winter sports participants must come to the Performing Arts Classroom that evening at 6.30PM for a meeting with Coach Taylor and the coaching staff.

  • Halloween is the last Tuesday in October!  Our traditional “Spook Parade” will be held in the main concourse of the school at 8:30 AM.  At 1:00 PM in the Performing Arts Classroom, the Upper School Student Government will sponsor our second Halloween “mini-carnival.”  Each class of the Upper School (i.e., seventh, eighth, etc.) will have a booth that the Early Years and Lower School students will be able to visit.  By the end of the day, Halloween certainly will have been well celebrated at Wayne Country Day School!

Best,

Todd Anderson
