Weather Advisory Update: Hurricane Florence
11 September 2018
Hurricane Florence continues her track towards us, and as of NOAA’s latest update this morning at 11AM, we still appear to be in the bullseye. Rather than to second guess the progress of this storm, it is certain that this hurricane is going to be a major weather event.
I have decided to close school for the next few days. If you know me, you won’t believe it; the guy that never closes school. But in light of the very serious nature of this storm, safety has to be the only consideration here. As you already know, tomorrow is an all-school workday for faculty which you all had expected. I am now adding Thursday, Friday, and Monday, for a total time span of 12-17 September 2018, during which the school will be closed. Having lived through Hurricane Iniki in 1992—a storm eerily similar to this one—I know the aftermath of Hurricane Florence is going to be significant. Even if we are lucky enough to have electricity on Monday, the debris and the flooding caused by Hurricane Florence will be with us for days after she has departed.
I apologize for this unprecedented inconvenience. And I trust you will understand that I make this decision in what I believe to the best interest of all of us. Please take care. I will try to be in touch via the website on Sunday.
